Concrete Wall Repair

The walls in a multi-story car park can be attacked by the pollution from car exhausts. The CO2 that the fumes contain can cause the breakdown of the alkaline environment surrounding steel reinforcement. Where untreated concrete infrastructure exposed to the atmosphere, carbon dioxide can easily migrate through cracks and pores in the concrete. The consequence is the reduction of the pH from 12-13 to around 9. This will inevitably lead to corrosion and concrete spalling. The carbonation of concrete is one of the main reasons for corrosion of rebar reinforcement.

Over the last 30 years or so, paint and coating manufacturers have made enormous technical advances in the development of protective coating.  Significant progress has been made by a select group of manufacturers of decorative anti-carbonation coatings. Coatings that offer high levels of performance with a paint film thickness that would not have been possible even just 10 years ago. In regard to repair projects, defective concrete can be cut out and the steel reinforcement can be protected with a corrosion preventative such as Rustoleum Noxyde a flexible coating to protect the steel prior to the application of concrete repair mortars and protective coatings.

Promain are also able to offer repair materials for concrete structures. Products such as Mapei Smooth & Repair R4 is a rapid-setting fibre-reinforced structural cementitious mortar. Smooth & Repair can be applied in a single layer from 3 to 40 mm thick, for repairing and smoothing concrete.

Promain offer many other products for repairing car parks. Our technical department can advise you on the most suitable product for your project.
