Owatrol Stan Protect works by blocking tannins and discolouration of finishes on interior softwoods. Owatrol Stan Protect is formulated to form a barrier within the wood, therefore blocking the tannins, preventing them from reaching the surface where they will discolour a finish or stain.
Owatrol Stan Protect is ideal for use on both exterior and interior, vertical and horizontal wood surfaces. It is also suitable for use on new or old uncoated wood. Use Owatrol Stan Protect before application of opaque or semi-transparent stains.
Ideal for use on woods with high tannins such as cedar, American redwood, oak, chestnut, etc. Suitable for use on wooden shingles, cladding, chalets, skirting boards, doors and more.
Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, grime, mildew and previous coatings. Treat mildew with a 50/50 bleach/water solution. Scrub solution on to surface and allow to stand for 10 to 15 minutes; rinse thoroughly.
After cleaning and/or stripping, allow wood to dry 2 to 3 good drying days or until it has reached a moisture content of 18 % or less before applying Owatrol Stan Protect. Owatrol Stan Protect can only be applied to bare wood surfaces. ALL other finishes MUST be completely and thoroughly removed. If necessary sand surface after cleaning and/or stripping (80 grit or coarser depending on wood species).
New wood surfaces:
Test wood for absorbency by sprinkling water on the surface. If water is absorbed quickly, the grain is sufficiently “open” and the surface is ready for finishing, follow data sheet guidance. If water is not absorbed then proceed as follows:-
Weathered wood surfaces (untreated):
Wood that has weathered longer than 12 months or turned grey should be cleaned with Owatrol Net-Trol to remove all loose wood fibres, dirt and other surface contaminants. If wood is severely contaminated, clean with Owatrol Aquanett or Owatrol Prepdeck and neutralise with Owatrol Net-Trol.
Previously treated surfaces (oiled, paint, stain, varnish):
All previous finishes must be completely and thoroughly removed.
Use as is. Do not dilute. Shake or stir can well before use. Apply one liberal, even, saturating application to all wood surfaces using either brush, roller, or spray. Soak in to end grain including any cut, bored or notched ends. Allow to dry.
If the over coating of Owatrol Stan Protect exceeds 48 hours, lightly sand surface with 80 grit paper and thoroughly dust off before applying the finish.
