Berney Arms Windmill

Following a site visit to the Berney Arms Windmill, and works identified in previous surveys, it was agreed
that the mill is showing signs of neglect.

Coal Tar Varnish for Windmill

There are large areas of blown brickwork caused by ingress of water over a number of years.   This is due to the lack of, and cracking of tar on these areas, along with poor maintenance. It is exposing the inner core of the brick to the elements.  If left the brickwork will deteriorate and eventually fall out making the mill unstable or at risk of partial collapse.

Centrecoat Refined Coal Tar

It is proposed that the Berney Arms Windmill is repainted with 2x coats of Refined Coal Tar /brushing tar to exposed areas of brickwork and one final overall coat to the mill. It is anticipated that this will give a characteristic gloss finish turning to matt over approximately 24 months and will require further coating in the future dependent on erosion due to the climate.
