Our instruction, from Mark Graham (Royal Shakespeare Company Production Manager), was to provide suitable fire protection for a timber construction. This would be touring the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. Crucially, we were tasked to meet stringent fire standards across many territories whilst also maintaining a decorative clear finish.
Additionally, the structure had to be able to cope with the rigours of regularly being dismantled for transportation. It was then re-erected at the next location.
Health & Safety
The construction was the set of the Gregory Doran’s 2012 production of Julius Caesar. It was imperative that they address Health and Safety concerns. Protection against fire was obviously at the top of the list.
One of the ranges that Promain supplies is the 3M Scotchkote LS4000 Clear Intumescent System, which was chosen for this project – we believe this base and LS4000 CL Intumescent Sealer to be the perfect choice.
The Scotchkote Intumescent System provides an attractive, clear and decorative finish. Furthermore it is extremely resistant to abrasion. The LS4000 System also conforms to the BS476 Part 6 & 7 (Class 1 & 0) spread of flame.

Well, it has to be added that Scotchkote LS4000 (formerly Thortex Pyro-Tech CS Copon LS4000) also holds the reputation that is behind all 3M timber products.
Scotchkote LS4000 and LS4000 CL works to protect timber in the event of fire. Application can be over wax free timber and other suitably prepared timber surfaces, providing protection against fire damage with a brush or roller.
Regular readers may recall that we have worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company before and we were delighted to be chosen to fulfil their requirements again.
