PPG News: Announce Opening of New Laboratory

PPG – The worlds largest paint manufacturer have announced the opening of a wood coatings research and development laboratory at its Springdale manufacturing plant. The lab will concentrate on developing industrial coatings for wood products.  These include flooring, kitchen cabinets, millwork, moldings and doors.  All of which are becoming ever more popular for use in commercial and residential interiors.

The new facility employs technicians and colour stylists as well as chemists.  It has the with the latest analytical, mixing, testing and application technology.

Kevin Braun, PPG vice president, Industrial Coatings, Americas, announced that the new lab enhances PPG’s ability to innovate and transfer coatings technologies from wood to other building product substrates, such as rubber, vinyl and luxury vinyl tile (LVT), to meet the evolving demands of the industry.

“There are three main factors driving coatings development across the wood and interior building product segments,” explained Braun. “They are different through colour and aesthetics, product durability and improved process efficiency to control manufacturing costs. By combining our product development capabilities at Springdale, our staff can quickly assimilate technical advances for all types of building product coatings and improve our collaboration with the staff at PPG’s Coatings Innovation Centre in nearby Allison Park.”

PPG’s environmentally sustainable wood coating technologies will remain an area of technical emphasis for the laboratory. They include ultraviolet (UV)-cure coatings, which emit virtually no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when applied, water-borne and solvent-borne coatings, and speciality products such as electro-beam (EB)-cure coatings and ink resins for resilient flooring.

100 Years of Experience

PPG has more than 100 years of experience in formulating, developing and producing products for the wood coatings industry.  They are now able to offer a complete portfolio of coatings for every type of wood finishing process. These include toners, primers, stains, fillers, sealers, glazes and topcoats.
