We know Christmas has been and gone, but the winter weather is still upon us. Protecting new wooden decking or cladding is important at this time of year.
Protecting External Wood
We are now starting to get enquiries about protecting external wood with wood oils. Mostly cladding so far, but new decking will certainly need protecting. Wood oils give the wood an enhanced natural look, accentuating the grain and providing protection from the weather and fungal attack.
Natural resins in new wood will prevent wood oil products from absorbing sufficiently. Allowing the wood to naturally weather without protection causes splitting, warping and cracking etc. So, what is the solution?
Owatrol Seasonite
Owatrol Seasonite Protection for New Wood is the answer, as this product allows both the natural weathering and prevents excess moisture from being absorbed and causing damage to wood. The resins gradually escape from the wood over the winter months, ready for oiling in the spring.
Clean & Prepare
When you are ready to oil your wood, clean and prepare it with Owatrol Net-trol Wood Cleaner and Colour Restorer, which is a mild oxalic acidic solution. It removes dead wood cells, restores faded wood back to its natural colour and improves the wood’s absorbency ready for oiling. Scrub the diluted Owatrol Net-Trol into the surface. Leave it for 20mins or so, and then gently rinse and allow to fully dry. You are now ready to oil the wood.
Applying The Wood Oil
Applying the wood oil is done in two applications in quick succession (unlike a paint, where you have to wait for the first coat to dry). This method is known as ‘wet on wet’. This method of application is necessary, as you are saturating the wood with the oil and therefore preventing the first application to seal the wood. As a guide, you are applying the second coat of oil about 10-15 minutes after the first. Wipe off any excess oil, that hasn’t been absorbed, to ensure an even appearance.
