Barn Paint and Stain for Wood

With the recent upsurge of traditional looking properties we have had an enormous increase in people inquiring about Barn Paint. Many of these people are inquiring after Traditional Creosote which was produced from coal tar. Coal tar creosote has fallen under new legislation introduced in July 2003. This legistation states that Creosote can only be sold to professional users.

There are a number of products that look like Creosote but do not preform as well. Some of these even contain recycled engine oil! We have looked at many of these products and the only one that we feel comfortable to recommend is the Ecosote Wood Preservative. This is a timber treatment that helps reduce fungi and stop rot to external timbers whilst proving to be a low hazard to the user and the environment. Clean with a mild cleaner such as sugar soap prior to use. For areas where there is heaver contamination use the Centrecoat Cleaner Degreaser.

Alternatives

Alternatively there are a couple of other products that we have tried and are extremely impressed with the results, the first is a solvent based wood stain called Solignum Architectural a BBA approved product. This easy to apply low maintenance opaque product has white spirit formulation. It will soak deep into to the timber and will still allow the wood grain to show through.

Preparation is also minimal for Solignum. Clean with either Centrecoat Multi Surface Cleaner or if there is green growth then we would recommend the Centrecoat GS36 a fungicidal cleaner that will eliminate the spores. Solignum Architectural again contains a biocide that will reduce rot and decay as well as resisting moisture ingress into the timber. Along with water shedding properties and also being micro porous Solignum Architectural has become a firm favourite with architects and specifies for maintaining window and doors, conservatories, sheds, gates and fences, clapboard, lap siding or weatherboard.

Eco-Friendly

A more eco friendly product is the Bedec Barn Paint available in a wide range of colours, this water based acrylic offers a surface coating in 3 different finishes matt, satin matt and a gloss although you must remember that water based paints do not offer the same high level gloss a solvent based coating will.

You can apply barn paint over previous coatings. This includes water based or solvent based products and weathered bitumen, tar, varnish as well as creosote. Barn Paint offers further benefits such as being elastomeric helping to prevent  the coating from flaking or cracking. All this with easy of application by paint brush, roller or even airless sprayer has helped establish Bedec Barn Paint as a firm favourite with not only the DIY market but the professional decorated as well.

It is ideal for weatherboard on barns, stables, garages, outbuildings and houses. Barn Paint is also suitable for sheds, silos, windmills, and factory units. This also includes corrugated and Plastisol metal box cladding.

We recommend this product for coating fencing, gates, farm equipment, tanks, drainpipes, doors, and windows. It is also suitable for many other wooden and fibrous surfaces. You can also apply it to plastic, concrete, weathered galvanised steel, cement render and brick. You can find many of these materials in and around the home or garden.
