Anti Slip Concrete Paint Case Study at Liebherr UK HQ

Recently, Promain UK Limited were contacted by the Facilities Manager at Liebherr’s UK Head Office. Our Technical Team were asked for help and advice in providing a anti slip concrete paint for demarcating zones. This was to be within their 15 acre head office site at Biggleswade.

During the site visit, we learnt that they had previously attempted using standard line marking paint. Some products such as Promain’s chlorinated rubber and thermoplastic line marking had been used previously in some areas. This had not withstood the daily movement of heavy plant and machinery across the surface. The constant movement of vehicles through workshop doors and other hatch areas had broken down the existing lines. Insufficient preparation, and quality of product used previously had resulted in this failure.

Liebherr develops and manufactures a variety of heavy machinery for the construction industry. Their Head Office in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, is approximately 40 miles north of London. It is one of their two sites in the United Kingdom. In addition to these, the company operates sales and service centres throughout England.

Promain UK Limited, the UK’s largest industrial paint distributor, has a long-established relationship with Grit Blasting UK. Grit Blasting UK are specialists in the preparation and application of long term coating systems. Promain introduced Grit Blasting UK to Liebherr to provide the best preparation and application for the works.

The Project

On inspection of the works to be undertaken, Promain’s Technical Team were able to determine that a very durable product was required. This was due to the metal caterpillar tracks and weight of the machinery rolling across it.

The Answer: Shot Blasting & Anti Slip Concrete Paint

Preparation of the concrete surface is key. Previously, the concrete had only been swept and allowed to dry, but most of the grout and laitance remained.

The most effective method of preparation in order to open up the concrete. This makes the concrete ready to accept a coating. The process is captive shot blasting.

Captive shot blasting is the process of firing steel beads or ‘shot’ at a high velocity. The metal beads remove loose material and contamination. The process therefore removes previous line marking products, laitance, dirt etc. This blasting also creates a profile for any new coating to grip on to.

Once the preparation is complete, the profiled surface allows the product to attach itself to the contours of the substrate. This therefore optimises adhesion and durability.

Products and technical specifications – line marking

We decided it was time to try a new product. Our Technical Team suggested a productthat would bind exceptionally well to the prepared surface, whilst remaining flexible and not become too brittle. It is an ideal product for anti slip paint for concrete floor requirements.

Promain suggested Centrecoat MMA Flex Concrete Grade. MMA Flex CG is a two pack, fast curing flexible coating for line marking on concrete surfaces. It is designed to provide a slip resistant, seamless floor finish with protective and decorative properties.

Centrecoat MMA Flex Concrete Grade is a two pack material consisting of a base component and catalyst. Users mix both products are mechanically together prior to use. The rapid cure allows light foot traffic after only one hour. You can even apply the product at freezing temperatures. This allows for year round maintenance, no matter the season.

A 5kg pack is sufficient to coat an area of 5m2 at a rate of 1kg/m2.
