As the UK largest supplier of cladding paint and solutions, Promain‘s technical team regularly have requests to specify metal cladding paint. Below we will discuss the Plastisol cladding paint specification from Rust-Oleum, applied to a job in Chatteris.
One of Promain’s regular customers, KJS Coatings Ltd, recommended us to Mayfair Refurbishments Ltd who are a large paint contractor. Mayfair Refurbishments Ltd specifically focus on cladding repairs and coatings along with protective roof coating systems. Mayfair got in touch with Promain as they required a 10 year decorative warranty on the wall cladding at Stainless Metalcraft in Chatteris.
Specification Stage
Ben from Promain’s technical team arranged a meeting between Rust-Oleum, Mayfair and ourselves at site in Chatteris. We inspected the condition of the existing cladding and discussed a specification. The aim was to find a cladding paint solution that will resist corrosion and UV degradation. This would ensure to the client that their property will look its best for the next 10 years.
The Plastisol coating on the profiled steel sheets had faded considerably from UV damage. The old cladding paint had peeled away in large amounts at various locations. If it hadn’t completely peeled away, large areas were flaking off and barely adhering.
The steel surface beneath the Plastisol was in incredibly good condition. This was good considering large amounts of it look like it had been exposed for some time.
Rust-Oleum’s Plastic Cladding Paint Specification
The Rust-Oleum decorative warranty consists of through preparation. Firstly, they require the removal of all flaking Plastisol. Afterwards, the substrate requires thoroughly cleaning and degreasing using Rust-Oleum ND14. Mayfair Refurbishments decided to use a high powered jet wash, with a minimum pressure of 600 Bars to remove all the flaky material. Following degreasing, the contractors could apply a primer and topcoat. This specification requires a priming coat of Rust-Oleum Noxyde, with a finishing coat of Rust-Oleum Metal Cladding Top Coat. Rust-Oleum’s specification dictates the required thickness to reach approval.
Applying Rust-Oleum’s Plastisol Cladding Paint
You can use Rust-Oleum Noxyde as a primer and topcoat in one. It has incredible adhesion properties to a variety of substrates including iron, steel, galvanised steel, zinc, lead and more.
This innovative product provides premium rust prevention and waterproofing. The two key benefits of Noxyde are its thickness and its ability to flex without tearing and breaking. This is why Rust-Oleum are confident of the specifications 10 and 15 year warranties. You can reach this warranty following carrying out the correct preparation and application of Noxyde to the correct thickness.
Mayfair carried out the spraying of Noxyde and Metal Cladding Top Coat over the course of 6 weeks. This was in gaps between wet weather. They required some more of the top coat during the job because the sprayer was using a larger nozzle size than the recommended size. This meant the sprayer was throwing out far too much product at a higher consumption. Therefore they were getting through the paint very quickly. Once the nozzle tip was reduced to 13-15 thou size the coverage rate was back to normal.
The opacity of Rust-Oleum Metal Cladding Top Coat is incredible. You can apply it in a single coat with the correct nozzle size. Unfortunately, due to the lack of the contractor following the data sheets application guidance paint and money was wasted in this instance. Always check the product data sheets before applying a product to save time and money in the long run. All data sheets are available on our website under each individual product.
