Suitable for heated buildings with clean atmospheres such as offices, schools, shops and hotels.

Externally C2 environments typically are mostly rural areas with atmospheres with a low level of pollution. Internally, C2 environments are unheated buildings where condensation may occur. Examples include depots, warehouses and sports halls.

C3 Environments externally typically consist of urban and industrial atmospheres with moderate sulfer dioxide pollution and coastal areas with low salinity. Internally, typical environments include production rooms with high humidity and some air pollution. Examples include food processing plants, laundries, breweries and diaries.

C4 Environments externally typically are industrial areas and / or coastal areas with moderate salinity. Internally, typical environments include chemical plants, swimming pools and coastal shipyards.

C5 Environment systems are suitable for temperate and subtropical areas with very high pollution and/or under the effects of significant chloride. Previously under C5-M and C5-I designations.

CX Environments are extreme industrial areas, offshore areas, suffering from salt spray. ISO12944:9 new standard.

Fresh water environments such as river installations and hydro plants.

Sea or brackish water environments such as structures in harbour areas or offshore steel structures. Examples include sluice gates, locks or jetties.

For buried steel structures in soil, such as tanks, steel pipes and steel piles.

For steel in sea or brackish water with cathodic protection.
