How anti-slip spray works

Anti-slip spray contains a special anti-slip additive that forms textured anti-slip particles within the dry coating. These anti-slip particles increase surface grip, helping reduce the risk of slips and falls on properly prepared surfaces.

Performance depends on the substrate and environment. Dirt, grease, oil and wear can make slippery surfaces unsafe, so regular inspection remains essential.

Rust-oleum supergrip anti-slip spray

Rust-Oleum Supergrip is a 500 ml solvent-based anti-slip spray designed to provide a non-skid topcoat on surfaces. It is suitable for metal, wood, concrete, tile, parquet, and tool handles and tools in interior and exterior environments.

Black, safety yellow and transparent colours are available. Coloured products use lead- and chromate-free pigments. Note that the published clear finish is satin, not a transparent matte finish.

Anti-slip spray for metal

Supergrip provides good adhesion to prepared metal and painted substrates. Bare steel needs the specified primer. Use anti-slip spray on suitable metal steps, metal grips and handles.

Clean the metal, remove rust, oil and grime, then allow it to dry. Apply the anti-slip coating only after checking compatibility and the manufacturer’s restrictions.

Anti-slip spray for wood and concrete

The slip spray is suitable for wood surfaces, parquet and concrete. Prepare the wood and concrete carefully, ensuring the surfaces are sound, clean, and dry. Previously painted wood or concrete should be tested before full application.

For large wood decking, concrete floors or asphalt paths, a brush- or roller-applied anti-slip floor system may be more suitable.

Can anti-slip spray be used on tiles?

Supergrip lists tile floors as suitable, but tiles vary. Test ceramic tiles, glazed tiles and painted substrates because a transparent coating may change their appearance.

Do not assume the product is suitable for bathroom floors, shower trays or other wet areas. Promain states that Supergrip should not be used in bathrooms or on surfaces that are regularly exposed to water. For bathroom floors, shower trays, linoleum or most plastics, request a compatible specialist system.

Plastics, linoleum and bathroom surfaces

Supergrip does not list most plastics or linoleum as approved. Solvents may affect plastics or linoleum. Do not apply slip spray to bathroom floors or shower trays without confirmation.

For most plastics, bathroom floors, linoleum and shower trays, contact Promain with the material and cleaning details. The team can explain restrictions.

Anti-slip spray for interior and exterior use

Some anti-slip sprays are suitable for both interior and exterior use, while others are intended for controlled indoor environments. Check resistance to weather, water, UV exposure, traffic and cleaning before applying a product outdoors.

A clear or transparent matt finish can add grip while allowing the existing colour or appearance to remain visible. However, the coating may still slightly alter the sheen or texture, so test it on a discreet area first.

Easy application on properly prepared painted substrates

Anti-slip aerosol coatings offer easy application across smaller or difficult-to-reach areas where applying a conventional floor coating may be impractical. Depending on the selected product, they may be ideal for steps, stairs, ramps, entrances and other surfaces where additional grip is required.

The surface must be clean, dry, and free of grease, dust, and loose material before application. Properly prepared painted substrates may also need to be lightly abraded to create a suitable key. Following the stated preparation method helps the coating adhere correctly and achieve a consistent non-skid surface.

Check the product data sheets before application

Always review the current product data sheets before applying an anti-slip spray. These contain the manufacturer’s instructions covering suitable substrates, preparation, coverage, drying times, recoating and environmental conditions.

Fast-drying products may help reduce downtime, but the treated area should remain closed until the coating is ready for use. No anti-slip coating can completely prevent falls, so it should form part of an appropriate maintenance and risk-management process.
