Types of Interior Wall Paints

At Promain we offer a number of types of interior wall paints, and the more knowledge you have about the surfaces you are painting, the easier it is to make the right choice. It’s also possible to mix different types of interior wall paint within a room, but you should know what you’re doing.

Matte Paint

Matte color is the most common of interior wall paints. There’s no shine or sheen to the finish, making it ideal for walls and ceilings where you don't want any visual distractions. It’s easy to apply, although it can often take more than a single coat to create a good solid color. Matte paint can be applied with a brush or roller and works well for covering imperfections on your walls.

Satin Paint

Satin finish is one of the types of interior wall paint that many people know of, but few really understand. The finish is somewhere between matte and gloss and produces a low, soft sheen.

An eggshell finish has a shine that’s extremely subtle but without the same smoothness as a satin finish. Therefore, it doesn’t highlight imperfections quite as much, making it a much more suitable interior wall paint.

Semi Gloss

Semi-gloss is another common interior paint, although it’s more commonly used on trim rather than walls. It offers a hard finish, is suitable for heavy use and is easy to clean with just soap and water.

Gloss Paint

Besides matte paint, gloss paint is the most common interior wall paint. It’s one you can use on most walls, although some people use it sparingly on these surfaces and prefer to use it on woodwork because of its high shine.

Interior Primers

Fungi has become an increasing problem over the last few decades and more and more people look to get rid of their fungi problems. Glixtone Fungi Shield has become an ever popular product in our selection and is ultra reliable. Fungi is found in areas with warm moist air, where it has everything it needs to grow. How to Paint a Ceiling

Preparation is key! The first job is to ensure that the ceiling is clean and dry. Make sure the floor is covered with a dust sheet and then wash the ceiling to remove any dust or cobwebs etc. Once the ceiling is dry, use some painters tape to mask around any lighting, cornicing or tricky areas. It is also a good idea to mask the area where the wall and ceiling meet. With the preparation and repairs all done and dried, you can now begin applying the topcoat. Starting with a small paintbrush, begin cutting in around any light fittings or cornicing etc. With the cutting in done you can now paint the remainder of the ceiling with a roller. The area that you have cut in does not need to be dry before you begin painting the rest of the ceiling, in fact it is better for this to still be wet as it will help it to blend in.

Adding Owatrol Floetrol to your water based ceiling paint will help keep a wet edge on the paint for longer. This reduces the tram lines left by the roller leaving you with a more even finish.

Ceiling Painting Tips

Tip some paint into your paint tray and load the roller – take care not to overload the roller as this will result in dripping and a lot of mess! Apply the paint in a ‘W’ or zig-zag shape across the ceiling as this will help to prevent lines.

If you have used a primer then a second coat is not necessary, but if you did not use a primer first, then wait for the ceiling to dry before applying a second coat.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wall & Ceiling Interior Paints

Should I paint my wall or ceiling first?

If you're painting an entire room, first paint the ceiling, then the walls. It's also usually better to paint large areas like walls before repainting the trim; because you'll work more quickly when covering open areas, this can result in roller spatters, overspray and occasional errant brushstrokes.

Can you use emulsion paint on ceilings?

If you're using emulsion use one of the specially designed base coats. You can also use emulsion over most wallpapers, so long as they are in good condition and firmly stuck down – but bear in mind if it's a textured paper then the texture will show through the paint.
