Due to the age of large parts of the UK rail infrastructure, Network Rail is required to carry out continual maintenance to all of its assets. These are not only the steelwork but many of the now aging buildings.
Network Rail often require a high-build bituminous coating to ensure compatibility with existing historic bitumen based coatings. This is to reduce any chance of the solvent in the new coating re-activating the exiting coating.
For manually prepared surfaces, the Network Rail M27 Specification has been tested beyond 15 years life expectancy to first maintenance. This even when applied at 200 microns over previous sound compatible coatings.
Where sand blasting back to bare metal is required in order to eliminate corrosion, a two component aluminium polyamine cured epoxy primer is recommended. This is followed by two coats of the high build bitumen coating. In this instance, a minimum 25 year life expectancy can be achieved with this 500 micron thick coating system.
