Intumescent Paint and Fire-Retardant Coatings

Intumescent means a coating or sealant which swells up when heated, protecting the material underneath or sealing a gap in the event of a fire. This works by a chemical reaction generated by heat.

This form of coating is very cost-effective as well as an efficient and practical solution for fire protection and corrosion protection. As well as preventing the spread of flames on more flammable items, it also helps to insulate steel surfaces from further thermal attack. In the case of fire, some coatings soften, react and decompose to form a carbon barrier. A foaming agent produces foam and a non-flammable gas; thus the layer expands tremendously to create an effective barrier.

Fire Resistant Paints

Here at Promain we have supply a range of fire resistant paints to customers throughout the UK. This range of fire resistant paints are all intumescent coatings which means that they provide a quality protective layer to the surface that they are applied. Intumescent coatings insulate surfaces from heat and oxygen, therefore helping to control the spread of flames. Using fire resistant paint ensure that the material below is protected which will help to maintain the structural stability of the building. Our range of fire resistant paints can be used on steel and cast iron, timber and wood, fabric, and we have coatings available that can be applied to walls and ceilings. Using fire resistant paint will help to prevent the spread of a fire if one occurs.

Fire Retardant Paint for Wood

Fire retardants are used to control the outbreak of a fire and can be used on walls, ceilings, floor and many other surfaces. Their main purpose is to delay or even stop the spread of fire over your surfaces. There are many different types of fire retardant paint, with some having chemicals that emit gases that are designed to reduce the spread of flames. Others will form a protective char layer which will help protect the surface for a specific length of time.

It is important to use these paints in an environment where there is a lot of fire exposure or high risk of the spread of fire with flammable products, as it will delay the spread of the fire and allow for more time to stop the fire from causing further damage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fire Retardant Paints & Intumescent Coatings

What is fire retardant paint?

How do you apply fire retardant paint?

Application of Intumescent steel paints is very easy. You can apply the paint using a brush or spray machine. Typically brush application is up to 500 microns per coat and spray is 1000 microns per coat. It is important that drying times are adhered to before application of the second or third coat to ensure the paint will protect the steel. During application a Wet Film Gauge is used to measure the thickness of each coat of paint. These gauges are supplied free of charge to all of our customers.

How does intumescent paint work?

An intumescent coating is basically a paint-like material which is inert at low temperatures – under 200 °C – but reacts with heat. As the temperature rises, during a fire event, the intumescent coating swells and forms a char layer that covers the steel.

How much does intumescent paint expand?

The typical expansion ratio of a thin film is 50:1, meaning that a coating 1 mm thick will expand to approximately 50 mm when in contact with fire. The advantages of thin film are that both solvent and water-based coatings can achieve decorative and bespoke surface finishes, and can easily cover complex shapes.

What is intumescent paint?

Intumescent paints are what we refer to as “Reactive Paints”. When the paint is subjected to heat it will react. In the case of an intumescent paint, when subjected to temperatures exceeding 120°C the paint will intumesce (swell up to 50 times the thickness of the paint) and form an carbon layer (Char) which, in the case of intumescent steel paint, thermally insulates the steel substrate and maintain a temperature below 550°C or 620°C for a given period of time: 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes.
