Application

Steel Fabrications
Once the surfaces to be coated are clean, dry and free from all contamination, grind down any sharp edges and shot blast to Sa2½ (as defined in ISO 8501-1) with an average surface profile of at least 50 microns. As an alternative to shot blasting, mechanically prepare the surfaces to St3-C or St3-D (as defined in ISO 8501-1). Painting should then be carried out within four hours.

When applied over freshly shotblasted steel a life expectancy to first maintenance of over 20 years is expected. For an ISO 12944 Class C2 environment a 120 micron dry film thickness over the peaks of shotblasted steel will offer a 15 year life to first maintenance, when applied in two airless spray coats.

Galvanised Steel
Ensure the surfaces to be coated are clean, dry and free from oily residues and other contaminates. New, bright, galvanised steel may be oiled or chemically treated, and this surface layer must be cleaned, degreased and tested by application of Mordant Solution to a small area. If the area of application turns entirely black, paint can be applied directly to the metal. If the colour change is uneven or fails to occur, degrease and repeat the test.

Plastisol Coating
Thoroughly wash and allow to dry. Remove any remaining contamination with a suitable degreaser and wipe with clean cloth or disposable paper towel. Localised repairs or damage should be lightly sanded to remove loose or flaky material until a sound edge is achieved. There is a tendency for the plasticisers in the Plastisol Coating to migrate in to the paint film and become tacky.

Plastisol cladding has a leatherette finish, a cladding with a smooth surface may be PDVF, PDVF cladding requires the use of a PDVF primer before application of Centrecoat cladding paint. For further details, please contact our technical department.
