Having a metal fence or gate on your property is a great way to improve security whilst maintaining the aesthetic quality of your premises. However, from time to time you may find that your gates or fences need a lick of paint to keep them looking as good as possible. When it comes to any paint job the failure or success depends on the weather you are painting in be sure to look out for a cloudy day with low temperatures.
Preparation is key, the first step to take in painting your fence is to protect the area around the fence, as you don’t want to ruin anything around the area you are painting. You will then need to remove any old paint and rust.
Already existing flakes of paint or rust can interfere with new paint, so these flakes of paint should be eliminated. This can be done by sanding the fence with an electric sander, this will help strip most of the rust and paint chips from the fence. Once sanded, use a steel brush to remove bits of rust and paint from inside the corners or other smaller places; this will help the new primer and paint adhere. Finish by using an emery cloth to roughen the painted areas that are still intact.
It’s now time to clean the metal fence in preparation for the paint, when you have successfully removed all flakes of paint or rust, you will need to clean the iron to create a smooth surface for the primer. Soap and water can help clean any debris, oil or grease simply hose down the surface with water so no soap suds are visible, then leave to dry.
Primer should never be considered optional, as it forms a strong base coat that is necessary for the paint to adhere too. We recommend Rustoleum 769 / 780 Damp-Proof Rust Primer, this Anti-Rust Primer for application to sound rusted steel and can be applied to moist surfaces.
After preparation and priming it is now time to paint the fence in the colour of your choice. We recommend spraying your fence as they are the easiest to work with and provide an even coverage. After applying the first coat leave it to dry and add a second coat to provide a thick, protective covering for the fence.

How to remove old paint from metal fences?
The most effective way to remove rust and flaking paint from metal work is using a drill with a metal brush attachment as this is more effective and less labour intensive than working the metal by hand.
How to paint a rusty metal fence?
With a wire brush scrub partially rusted metal areas with a wire brush to remove flakes and powdery surface rust, then prime with a rust-inhibitive primer. Once done, you can paint over rust.
How to paint a galvanized metal fence?
Unfortunately paint will not adhere to galvanized steel. The layer of zinc left on the metal after the galvanization process is meant to reduce corrosion, but it also rejects paint, eventually causing it to peel or shed.
What is the best paint for metal gates?
The best paint choices for metal surfaces are Oil or Enamel based Paints. Oil-based paints and metal surfaces go together like crab and dumpling. They are usually the best option for metal surfaces.
