Tikkurila Valtti Opaque

Tikkurila Valtti Opaque is a semi-matt, low-odour, special alkyd-reinforced acrylate paint for use on exterior wood surfaces.

Best Uses

Tikkurila Valtti Opaque is an ideal protective decorative coating for wooden exterior cladding, weatherboarding, window frames and more.

Valtti Opaque can be used for new surfaces, and surfaces previously coated with Valtti Opaque or semi-transparent wood finishes. Suitable for smooth and sawn wood surfaces and for impregnated wood. Also suitable for industrially primed wood surfaces.

Not suitable for treating floors.

Offers good weather resistance, flexibility and an extremely durable low-maintenance finish. Tikkurila Valtti Opaque is moisture regulating and will not crack, peel or blister.

Application

All surfaces to be painted must be dry, the moisture content of the wood below 20%, the temperature of the air at least +5 °C, and the relative humidity of the air below 80%.

Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from grease, dirt, oil, wax, rust, all loose material and surface contamination. Remove all loose material from the previously painted surface with a steel brush. Wash mouldy surfaces with Tikkurila Homeenpoisto Mould Removal solution according to instructions.

Treat rusting metal parts like nail heads with Tikkurila Rostex Super Metal Primer. Ensure that existing glossy, gloss painted and filled surfaces are thoroughly flatted down. Ensure that all surfaces are thoroughly prepared prior to priming and painting. Make sure that timber cladding, weatherboarding and timber glazing beads, etc. are adequately fastened with non-corrosive fixings.

Note: Discolouration of paint especially noticeable within light colours may occur over knots and resinous areas present in the wood as a result of temperature and humidity fluctuations. Particular attention must be made with regards to preparation should be given to wood such as Oak, Teak, Cedar, Douglas Fir, Mahogany and Idigbo, etc., which contain oil and water-soluble tannin which may impair the drying, hardening or adhesion of surface coatings and discolour the finished surface.

Prime new bare wood overall at the earliest possible stage of construction and spot prime all bare areas on previously painted wood with Tikkurila Valtti Base or Tikkurila Valtti Akvabase Priming Oil. Note: A priming coat of Valtti Base or Valtti Akvabase should be applied to all exterior wood which has not been pre-treated or vacuum impregnated with an approved preservative. Apply liberally on end-grain.

Stir the paint thoroughly before use. Usually Valtti Opaque is used unthinned, if necessary thin with water. Apply two coats with brush or spray on new surfaces and one or two coats in maintenance painting depending on the colour difference of the substrate and the condition of the surfaces to be treated. When treating impregnated wood with light colours, apply two or three coats. Reserve enough paint mixed in one container for a uniform surface to avoid possible colour differences. Apply liberally on end-grain.

Apply via brush or spray. Polyester and nylon paint brushes are best suited for the application
of Valtti Opaque. For airless spray use a 0.018” – 0.023” spray tip.
