Which garden furniture treatment do you need?

Start by deciding whether you want to retain the natural appearance of the timber, add colour or create a more substantial surface finish.

For a natural timber appearance: choose a suitable garden furniture oil that enhances the grain without creating an opaque painted finish.

For teak and dense hardwoods: look for an oil specifically suitable for teak, hardwood or tropical wood. The density and natural characteristics of these timbers can affect which products will penetrate and perform correctly.

For additional colour: choose a garden furniture stain or tinted exterior wood treatment where you want to alter the appearance while retaining some visible grain.

For a painted finish: a suitable exterior furniture paint may be a better option than an oil or stain where you want an opaque colour.

For a film-forming finish: use an exterior varnish only where the manufacturer specifies it for the timber, application and level of outdoor exposure.

Existing treatments matter. If the furniture has already been oiled, stained, painted or varnished, establish what is on the surface before applying a different coating.

Garden furniture oils and treatments from Promain

Promain supplies specialist treatments for different types of wooden garden furniture and finish requirements.

Teknos Woodex Aqua Wood Oil

Teknos Woodex Aqua Wood Oil is designed for outdoor timber applications including wooden garden furniture. It is a useful option where you want an oiled finish for suitable exterior wood rather than an opaque coating.

Different colour options and specifications are available, so check the selected product before ordering, particularly where UV protection or a particular appearance is required.

Owatrol Deks Olje D1 Wood Oil

Owatrol Deks Olje D1 is a penetrating, non-film-forming wood oil suitable for a wide range of interior and exterior timber, including garden furniture.

It is particularly relevant where dense or tropical hardwoods such as teak are being treated. Because Deks Olje D1 uses a specific saturation application process, follow the product instructions rather than applying a standard coat count.

Osmo UV Protection Oil

Osmo UV Protection Oil is another option for suitable exterior timber where retaining the natural character of the wood and reducing the effects of weather exposure are priorities.

Check the individual product specification carefully before selecting it for tables, chairs or other furniture, as suitability can depend on the timber, orientation and surface being treated.

The right product will depend on the species and condition of the wood, previous treatment and the finish required. If you are unsure, Promain can help narrow the available options before you order.

What is the best oil for teak garden furniture?

Teak and other dense hardwoods should be matched with products designed for those types of timber.

A suitable teak oil for garden furniture can enhance the colour and grain of the wood while providing an easier-to-maintain natural finish. Specialist penetrating oils can also be useful on dense hardwoods where a conventional film-forming coating may not be the preferred option.

However, teak does not have to be oiled. Some owners allow exterior teak to weather naturally, while others prefer to maintain a richer timber colour.

If the furniture has previously been varnished, painted or treated with another coating, check whether it needs to be removed before applying teak oil. An oil cannot necessarily penetrate correctly through an existing surface coating.

Choosing treatments for hardwood and softwood furniture

Different timbers behave differently outdoors, so avoid choosing a product based on colour or finish alone.

Hardwood garden furniture

Teak, oak and other hardwoods can vary considerably in density and natural oil content. Choose a garden furniture oil, stain or other treatment that specifically lists the timber or type of hardwood as a suitable substrate.

Softwood garden furniture

Pine and other softwoods can be more absorbent and may require a different coating system. Depending on the timber and chosen finish, preservative treatment or another preparatory product may also be required.

Previously treated furniture

If the furniture is already oiled, stained, painted or varnished, inspect the existing finish before recoating.

Loose or failing material may need to be removed, while switching from a film-forming coating to a penetrating oil can require more extensive preparation. Always check compatibility with the new treatment.

Oil, stain or varnish for garden furniture?

Each finish gives wooden garden furniture a different appearance and maintenance requirement.

Garden furniture oil is a good option where you want to retain the appearance and visible grain of the timber. Many specialist oils penetrate rather than building a heavy opaque layer over the wood.

Garden furniture stain is more appropriate where changing or enhancing the timber colour is part of the project. Translucent treatments can add pigment while allowing the wood grain to remain visible.

Exterior varnish creates a film over the timber and can provide a different appearance from penetrating oils. If using varnish outdoors, make sure the selected product is specifically suitable for exterior furniture and the timber being coated.

Think about future maintenance as well as the first-day appearance. The easiest finish to maintain will depend on the coating system, how exposed the furniture is and whether it remains outside throughout the year.

How much garden furniture oil do you need?

Tables, chairs and benches contain more surface area than their footprint suggests. Slats, legs, edges, arms and undersides can all increase the amount of product required.

Coverage also varies according to the timber and its condition. Dry or weathered wood can absorb more treatment than previously maintained furniture.

Before ordering, check the individual product's:

  • theoretical coverage;

  • application method;

  • coat or application requirements;

  • drying and recoating times; and

  • timber suitability.

Do not assume every garden furniture oil needs two or three coats. Some penetrating products use specific application methods that differ considerably from conventional paints or varnishes.

How should you prepare wooden garden furniture?

Good preparation is important whether you are oiling teak, staining hardwood or applying another exterior finish.

Before treatment:

  1. Clean the furniture and remove dirt and surface contamination.

  2. Allow the timber to dry sufficiently.

  3. Remove loose or failing previous coatings.

  4. Deal with greyed or weathered fibres where required.

  5. Sand the surface where specified for the selected product.

  6. Check that any existing treatment is compatible with the new finish.

  7. Test the product on a small inconspicuous area where appropriate.

Previously varnished or painted furniture may require substantially different preparation from bare or previously oiled timber.

If you don't know what the existing finish is, speak to Promain before applying a new product.

Applying garden furniture oil, stain or varnish

Application requirements differ between products.

Depending on the selected treatment, application may be by brush, roller, sponge or lint-free cloth. Some oils require excess material to be removed, while specialist penetrating systems can have their own application process.

Use the manufacturer's current technical data sheet for:

  • application method;

  • number of applications or coats;

  • drying time;

  • recoating interval;

  • suitable weather conditions;

  • coverage; and

  • tool cleaning.

Allow the finish to dry fully before returning tables, chairs and benches to normal use or putting covers over the furniture.

Maintaining outdoor wooden furniture

Garden furniture is exposed to sunlight, rain and repeated changes in moisture throughout the year. Horizontal table tops, chair arms and exposed edges can also weather faster than more sheltered areas.

Inspect the furniture periodically for fading, dry-looking timber, reduced water resistance, worn areas or breakdown of the existing finish.

Where maintenance is needed, clean the furniture and follow the recoating instructions for the product already applied. Maintaining the finish before it has completely failed can often reduce the amount of preparation required.

If furniture is stored or covered during winter, make sure the surface is fully dry before covering it and avoid trapping moisture against the timber.

Other exterior timber treatments

If your project extends beyond garden furniture, choose treatments designed for those particular surfaces.

For exterior timber where additional UV resistance is a priority, compare Promain's UV-resistant wood finish options.

For fencing and boundary timber, use a dedicated fence stain or other suitable fence coating rather than assuming a garden furniture product is appropriate.

Promain also stocks specialist products for decking, exterior timber and painted garden furniture, allowing different areas of an outdoor project to be treated with coatings intended for their particular use.

Choose the right garden furniture finish before you order

Before buying garden furniture oil, stain or varnish, make a note of:

  • the timber species, if known;

  • whether the furniture is hardwood or softwood;

  • whether it is bare, oiled, stained, painted or varnished;

  • its current condition;

  • whether it remains outside throughout the year;

  • whether you want a natural, translucent or opaque appearance; and

  • whether maintaining the existing colour is important.

These details make it easier to identify a compatible product and avoid unnecessary preparation or unsuitable coatings.

If you're unsure which garden furniture treatment you need, call Promain Paints on 01462 421 333 and tell the technical team about the timber and its current finish. They can help narrow down suitable oils, stains and protective treatments for the project.
