Product Description

Zinsser B-I-N AQUA is a ground-breaking water-based formula, developed for both professional and commercial applications as a water-based primer, sealer, stain killer and odour blocker. With exceptional adhesion and ultra-low odour, the advanced formula contains only trace elements of VOCs.

Best Uses

Benefits for Zinsser B-I-N Aqua benefits from being:

  • Ultra-low odour
  • Contains only trace VOCs (<0.1%)
  • Interior and exterior use
  • Effectively primes, seals and blocks stains
  • Locks in problem odours
  • Superior adhesion without the need for sanding
  • Blocks knot stain and sap streaks

Zinsser B-I-N Aqua is ideal for:

Priming: Use as a full-surface primer on wood panels, building boards, doors, frames, PVC, plywood, concrete, glossy paint and varnish, non-ferrous metal such as galvanised metal, copper, aluminium and stainless steel and other paintable surfaces.

Spot-Priming: B-I-N® AQUA is excellent for spot priming knots, resin, stains, etc, and is also ideal for interior spot priming of water stains. Note that the primer on spot-primed areas with a porous surface may show through if the topcoat has poor coverage. This also applies to many ceiling paints and shiny enamels – only use a topcoat with good coverage. For best results bring forward spot primed areas by allowing a minimum of 45 minutes for the spot primed area to dry before overcoating with a full coat of B-I-N® AQUA to the whole area, or to a natural break.

Sealing: B-I-N® AQUA penetrates and seals porous surfaces and dries to a smooth finish with excellent hiding properties. B-I-N® AQUA is an excellent primer for enamel and is ideal for wood, new cured plaster, concrete and concrete block, stucco, drywall, joint compound, uncoated wallcovering and other porous surfaces.

Stain & Odour Blocking: B-I-N® AQUA will effectively block stains from water, nicotine, grease, oil, soot, mildew, tannin, crayon and lipstick. B-I-N® AQUA is also an outstanding odour barrier and effectively blocks all types of odours including fire damage, smoke, nicotine, mildew, pet urine and odour from fireplaces and heaters.

Fire Damage: Replace severely charred substrates and remove loose soot and other contaminants with a dry chemical sponge or duster. Prime damaged surfaces with B-I-N® AQUA to block smoke stains, water stains, and seal odours.
Knots & Sap Streaks: Seal knots and resin with one to two coats of B-I-N® AQUA. If the wood is new, two coats are recommended.

Glossy Surfaces: Glossy enamel paint and clear finishes, cabinets, panelling, glass, Formica®, MDF, ceramic tile and non-ferrous metal can be primed without sanding or de-glossing.

Application

Surface Preparation: Surfaces should be clean, dry, sound and free of any contamination, mildew, rust or unsound coatings that may interfere with adhesion. If unsure, wash surface with Zinsser® Universal Degreaser & Cleaner, rinse thoroughly and allow the surface to dry completely. Remove interior mould with Zinsser® Mould Killer & Remover. For exterior surfaces treat mould with a proprietary, exterior grade mould killer and remover in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Remove any peeling and/or unsound coatings. Sand any remaining paint film edges smooth. When priming over stained areas, first attempt to remove as much of the stain as possible by washing, sanding, scraping, etc. Allow surface to dry completely before priming. Substrate moisture content should not exceed 12%. New plaster which is polished or dusty should be sealed first with Zinsser® Gardz®.

Degrease new galvanised steel with Zinsser® Universal Degreaser & Cleaner ensuring all traces of oil and surface contamination are removed. Unweathered powder coatings and Plastisol to be abraded and degreased thoroughly before priming. Special precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces as they may contain harmful lead. Ensure application conditions are favourable and good painting practices are observed. Apply when air and surface temperature are between 7°C and 32°C with a relative humidity of less than 85%. Do not apply in direct sunlight or if condensation, rain, fog, frost etc. is likely to affect the freshly applied primer coat.

Application: Shake or stir well before use. Apply using a brush, roller or sprayer (follow manufacturer’s instructions for sprayers; for airless spraying, use 0.015–0.017” tip at 1700-2200 psi). Thinning is not normally required, however, if necessary, add no more than 5% clean water. Do not thin if using for stain, knot or odour blocking.

Dry Time: At normal temperatures, Zinsser B-I-N® AQUA is touch dry in 25 minutes and can be recoated in 45 minutes. Lower temperatures, higher humidity, and the addition of tint will prolong the dry and cure time of the product. For knots and stains, allow 2 hours to dry. When sealing water stains, some stains may appear in the primer as it dries, this is normal. Stains will be locked into the primer film and will not bleed into the topcoat.

Coverage is up to 9m2 per litre. Coverage may vary depending upon method of application and surface porosity.
