System

Thermoguard Fire Varnish is a varnish system with options of clear or stained finish for the Fire Protection of timber and timber derivative substrates to BS EN (13501) Class B s2d0 and old Class 0 (for 30 or 60 minutes Fire Resistance contact Thermoguard Technical). When exposed to fire, the Thermoguard Fire Varnish System expands to create an insulating barrier, protecting timber surfaces from flames, heat and oxygen and suppressing emission of deadly smoke & gasses.

Thermoguard Fire Varnish System is made up of Thermoguard Fire Varnish 2K Basecoat (a two component, water-based product consisting of a base and activator mixed together before use) which creates a clear, intumescent basecoat to be finished with Thermoguard Fire Varnish Overcoat available in a clear or stained matt or satin finish. Thermoguard Fire Varnish Interior / Exterior Overcoat provides protection against wear & UV, whilst Thermoguard Fire Varnish 2K Basecoat provides the Fire Protection.

For Professional Use Only.

Application

Cover, countersink & fill, or use non-ferrous, galvanized, stainless or sherardised fittings. Ensure surfaces are dry, clean and free of all contamination. Varnished, sealed or non-porous wood should be abraded thoroughly with medium grade silicon.

During application & drying of the full system, ensure surfaces are thoroughly dry – max 18% moisture content. Maximum relative humidity RH 75%. Ensure adequate ventilation and air flow. Static air will slow down drying times. Minimum air temperature 6°C. Minimum surface temperature 3°C above dew point. Avoid condensation.

Timber must be clean, thoroughly dry & free from wax, silicones, residues of caustic / high pH wood treatments or paint stripper residues prior to application (maximum 18% moisture content). If not yet erected, coat all sides & ends before erection. If erected already, seal gaps behind boards wherever practical with expanding fire-resistant foam.

Once fully prepared apply:

  • 1x coat of Thermoguard Fire Varnish 2K Basecoat
  • After 1 - 4 days after Basecoat is hard dry, apply 1 coat of Thermoguard Fire Varnish Overcoat for internal. If product is for external use, apply 2 coats for Matt or Satin Woodstain Colour.

Please note, this product is not suitable for the topside of floor surfaces that will be walked on.

Application by painters, decorators & other professional users only. Refer to Product Data Sheet on Thermoguard Fire Varnish 2K Base & Overcoat prior to application.

The Thermoguard Fire Varnish System can be applied over firmly adhered standard clear varnish. For existing stained varnishes, stain coatings, old fire coatings or if in doubt, contact our Technical Department.

If preservatives are required, use rapid drying clear non water repellent grades. For tanalised or other preservative treatments, contact our Technical Department. Allow adequate time for stain or preservative fluids to escape before applying the Fire Varnish System.
