What is cold galvanising spray?
Cold galvanising is the application of a zinc-rich protective coating to correctly prepared steel at ambient temperature. The zinc particles make electrical contact with the steel and act as a sacrificial anode, corroding preferentially to help protect the underlying metal.
This differs from ordinary spray paint, which mainly creates a passive barrier. It also differs from hot-dip galvanising, where fabricated steel is immersed in molten zinc. Cold galvanising spray is useful when dismantling or hot dipping is impractical.
How zinc-rich primer protects bare metals
A true zinc-rich coating provides cathodic or galvanic protection. If the coat is damaged, the zinc surrounding the exposed point can continue to sacrifice itself to reduce corrosion of the steel.
Performance depends on zinc loading, zinc purity, film thickness, adhesion and preparation. Not every silver-coloured spray paint provides the same level of protection, so review the product data sheet rather than choosing based on decorative finish alone.
Selected cold-galvanising aerosols can be used as a zinc-rich primer on properly prepared bare metal surfaces. The zinc-rich coating helps protect steel where the original galvanised layer has been damaged by cutting, drilling, welding or general wear. Always confirm whether the selected product is intended to act as a primer, a standalone coating or part of a wider paint system.
Zinga zingaspray 96% zinc aerosol
Zinga Zingaspray is a 500 ml galvanising spray containing 96% zinc in the dry film. It provides cathodic protection for ferrous metal structures and is intended for spot repair of worn or damaged hot-dip galvanising and items previously protected with Zinga.
Zingaspray is suitable for correctly prepared bare steel and other specified bare metals. One coat dries at approximately 20–25 microns, so the number of coats must be determined by the required system and technical data rather than by a general rule.
Rust-oleum hard hat 2185 galva zinc
Rust-Oleum 2185/1085 is a fast-drying zinc-rich primer based on an epoxy ester resin. Pure zinc pigment provides cathodic protection against rust on new bare steel and galvanised steel surfaces.
The grey coating is touch-dry in approximately ten minutes at 20°C and fully cured after seven days. It can be recoated with compatible non-saponifiable coatings, but always observe the stated recoat window.
Rust-oleum galva expresse 2180
Galva Expresse 2180 is a fast-drying zinc-rich primer for new bare steel and galvanised surfaces. It is touch-dry in approximately five minutes at 20°C, offers around 1.4 m² coverage per 500 ml aerosol at a 35-micron dry film thickness, and resists dry heat up to 350°C.
This galvanising spray is useful where a quick industrial maintenance programme is required. Heat resistance, drying speed, and corrosion performance are separate characteristics; confirm the complete coating specification.
Zinc-aluminium galvanising sprays
Rust-Oleum Galva Plus 2120 combines zinc and aluminium pigments to give a metallic appearance similar to new galvanised steel. It is intended for touch-up of galvanised surfaces and offers approximately 1.7 m² of coverage per aerosol can at a 25-micron dry film thickness.
Rust-Oleum Galva Zinc-Alu 2117 is a zinc-rich primer and topcoat for small repairs to damaged galvanised surfaces. Its aluminium-coloured coat is suitable for dry heat up to 300°C and can be recoated with compatible non-saponifiable coatings.
Zinga zingalu for galvanised repairs
Zinga Zingalu contains 92% zinc and 4% aluminium in the dry film. The semi-gloss metal-grey aluminium finish is designed to resemble hot-dip galvanisation while repairing worn, damaged or previously zinc-coated metal structures.
Zingalu is ideal for touch-up after welding and for areas affected by cutting or grinding. It offers resistance to mechanical shocks, abrasion and erosion, but its zinc-aluminium balance differs from Zingaspray’s 96% zinc cathodic system.
Repairing damaged galvanised surfaces
Galvanising spray is commonly used around welds, cut edges, drilled holes, fasteners and areas damaged during transport or installation. It can restore continuity of protective coatings on beams, gates, fencing, machinery, and other exterior steel structures.
Inspect the complete unit before work begins. Remove flaking material, welding residues, and corrosion products, then feather-sand the surrounding paint or zinc coatings as the chosen system requires.
Surface preparation for galvanising spray
Surface preparation is essential. Remove oil, grease, salts, dirt, loose rust and other contamination. Many high-performance zinc coatings require abrasive blasting of bare metals or sweep blasting of galvanised surfaces to achieve the necessary profile and adhesion.
Do not simply spray over active rust. Cold galvanising performs best when zinc particles can interact with clean steel, so remaining rust, old paint or poor preparation can isolate the zinc and reduce protection.
How to apply cold galvanising spray paint
Read the product and safety data sheets before application. Work in a well-ventilated area, wear the specified protective equipment and protect adjacent surfaces from overspray.
Shake the aerosol vigorously after the mixing ball is heard, and continue shaking during use to keep zinc particles suspended. Hold the can at the stated distance, typically around 25 cm, and apply the spray in controlled passes to achieve the required wet and dry film thicknesses.
When correctly specified and applied, a zinc-rich aerosol can create a tough protective layer and provide excellent corrosion protection for compatible steelwork. Allow the coating to dry fully before applying another product or returning the surface to service.
Drying, recoating and top coats
Allow every coat to dry for the time stated by the manufacturer. Some Rust-Oleum aerosols must be recoated within an early window or after a longer interval. Ignoring this can affect adhesion and the final protective coating.
Before applying a top coat, check chemical compatibility. Some coatings can react with zinc through saponification, so use only an approved non-saponifiable or otherwise compatible top coat. A decorative finish should never compromise the galvanic protection beneath it.
Cold galvanising for industrial and exterior use
Cold galvanising spray supports maintenance of steel beams, structural frames, gates, railings, agricultural equipment and industrial machinery. Suitable systems may also be used for marine structures, but preparation and film-build requirements are especially important in environments with severe corrosion.
Service life cannot be stated from the aerosol type alone. Exposure, preparation, zinc content, film thickness, damage and maintenance all affect performance. Inspect exterior metal structures regularly and repair damaged areas before rust spreads.
Choosing the right galvanising spray
Choose Zingaspray when a high-zinc cathodic repair system is required; Zingalu when protection and a brighter hot-dip-style decorative finish are both priorities; or the appropriate Rust-Oleum zinc-rich primer or zinc-aluminium aerosol for the specified repair, heat, and overcoating requirements.
