A single pack product for improving the adhesion properties of solvent based surface coatings.
Sometimes, even anti-slip floor paint needs an extra level of durability and added grit to improve under-foot and under-vehicular skid-resistance. Generally, Coo-Var, Rust-Oleum and Sika manufacture compatible anti-slip paint additives to be used with their epoxy, solvent or water-based floor paints.
Rust-Oleum Epoxyshield anti-slip-additives can be added to some of their garage floor paints, to help extend the lifespan of the surface through above normal wear and tear. Applied evenly to a freshly laid floor coating, this highly effective non-skid additive will make lighter work of any cleaning work.
If sprinkled or broadcast paint additives and decorative flakes fall outside of the painted area, it is not advised to paint over them. Applied methods are quite strict for full product benefits to be achieved, and changing application technique from that outlined in product datasheets could mean that a surface is not sufficiently anti-slip, and could risk the topcoat peeling away, as it does not directly adhere to a surface.
A large volume of Sikafloor products available at Promain reference Sika Quartz Sand in their description and datasheets. This light-coloured, kiln dried, graded quartz sand provides a mechanical key for subsequent levelling materials. It can also bulk up screeds and mortars, along with being an anti-slip additive.
Anti-slip additives can be added to all floor paints to increase friction. These additives are particularly useful in conditions where the floor may get wet, oily or covered in loose particles (e.g. sawdust, powders etc.). The anti-slip additives will help reduce the possibility of wheel-spin and skid on greasy, wet floors.
Resincoat Aggregate is a kiln dried silica sand which when added to paint gives it anti slip properties. It is available in a range of grades to provide varied slip resistance as per user requirements. Resincoat Aggregate silica can be added to any of our floor paints and coatings, and even some screeds or mortars to improve the level of slip resistance achieved underfoot.
Resincoat Aggregate Anti slip paint additive can be applied in a number of ways, either pre-mixed, scattered into a single paint coat system, or sealed within a two coat system.
Pumice aggregate is an extremely light aggregate which has the advantage of being able to mix into the paint prior to application. It is a non-microbead solution to a fine, aggregated finish. Pumice gives a rough-profiled finish and significantly increases slip resistance. When using, pour the pumice into the paint and mix thoroughly. After mixing, use the paint immediately. The paint must be applied with a roller to achieve a consistent finish.
SuperTough Aggregate is an iron-silicate grit. It has good shatter resistance and has a hard, sharp finish to give fantastic grip. To use SuperTough Aggregate on a previously-painted floor, apply a coat of floor paint and then liberally scatter the grit over the surface of the wet paint. Allow the floor to dry for a full 24 hours. Once dry, remove the excess SuperTough Aggregate that hasn’t stuck with a soft brush. Then the paint over the whole surface of the floor again to seal the grit in place on the floor.
Aggregate is a bit of a catch-all term for pieces of broken or crushed material like stone or gravel which are used in concrete or more generally throughout building and construction work.
When it comes to terrazzo flooring, the aggregates might be granite, flint, glass or other small chips that are chosen to add colour or a specific aesthetic. The choice of aggregate plays a very important role in the floor’s appearance, style and visual impact, for example by creating a bright and glittering, classic and traditional or modern and clean surface.
While terrazzo flooring itself dates back to Ancient Rome, today’s advances in flooring technology means that aggregates such as marble, quartz, concrete, porcelain, plastic and metal can all be combined with an epoxy binder and polished into a smooth terrazzo surface.
At Promain you can choose an aggregate additive to add non-slip or impact resistance to floor coatings, with graded colour quartz mixtures available that provide a decorative finish. Our range of aggregates at Promain includes additives for paints, floor coatings and systems, and epoxy mortar screeds.

When installing a garage floor coating yourself, the generally accepted method to applying a non-slip additive such as quartz, flakes or screed is to mix it into the final top coat prior to rolling it onto the floor. When applying it to 100% solid epoxy or polyurea, it’s best to mix it into the final top coat first and then pour the contents in ribbons across the floor. You can then roll and back roll the coating as usual. The non-slip grit will tend to disperse itself evenly across the surface of the floor this way.
If you are applying a polyurethane top coat or a thinner water based epoxy kit such as Bradite Thinner TP33, then you will be working by rolling the contents out of a paint tray. It’s best to mix the additive into the coating then pour it into your tray. It’s important to note that while these additives do fairly well at staying suspended in the mix for a short while, they will sink to the bottom and should be remixed each time before pouring the contents into the tray.
Other methods involve sprinkling the additive on top of the coating or base coat before applying the final top coat or just tossing the non-slip additive on top of the final top coat, however this issue with this method means you can get poor distribution of the non-slip aggregate or when applied to the top of the final coat, it can pull away with wear and create pockets in the surface that collect dirt.

How can I make my garage floor less slippery?
The first of these would be garage floor paint or an epoxy garage floor coating with anti-slip grit added. The anti-skid additive is applied to the mix of the final coat to create a surface that is soft enough to walk on in your bare feet, yet gritty enough to prevent slip/fall accidents in slippery conditions.
