Owatrol Solid Colour Stain contains Owatrol E-B which provides an adhesion coat for exterior vertical and horizontal surfaces. Owatrol Solid Colour Stain is suitable for application on wood substrates, including docks, decking, cabins, cladding, fencing, screens and outdoor furniture plus many more.
With the correct application method being followed, Owatrol Solid Colour Stain is guaranteed against flaking and peeling for 15 years on vertical surfaces and 5 years on horizontal surfaces.
Owatrol Solid Color Stain is for exterior use only and can be used to provide protection from the elements on new or weathered exterior wood, softwood, hardwood, tropical wood, thermo heated wood, untreated solid wood, primed and previously finished fibre cement board and plywood, weathered vertical masonry including stucco, painted blocks and EIFS, plus many more substrates.
For New wood surfaces:
Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, grime and mildew. After cleaning, allow wood to dry 48 hours or until it has reached a moisture content of 19 % or less before finishing. New wood often has a hard shiny surface known as mill glaze that prevents maximum penetration; this and the moisture content of new wood prevents the proper adhesion of any coating.
Initially, apply a coat of Owatrol Seasonite, and allow wood to weather a minimum 6 months. After 6 months apply Owatrol Solid Colour Stain.
For Weathered Wood Surfaces:
Uncoated wood surfaces that have weathered longer than six months require thorough cleaning before applying a finish. Use Owatrol Net-Trol (according to label instructions), along with a pressure washer or stiff bristle brush to remove the loose fibre, dirt and other surface contaminants. If necessary sand the wood (100 grit). Surfaces must be free of dirt, grease, grime, mildew and previous coatings. After cleaning, allow wood to dry 48 hours or until it has reached a moisture content of 19 % or less before finishing.
For Previously Coated Surfaces:
Sand or scrape to remove all loose flaking or peeling finish. If necessary strip with Owatrol Dilunett and neutralise with Owatrol Net-Trol. Surfaces must be free of dirt, grease, grime, mildew and previous coatings. After cleaning, allow wood to dry 48 hours or until it has reached a moisture content of 19 % or less before finishing.
NOTE: Cedar, Redwood and Hardwoods may darken with Owatrol Dilunett. If this occurs brighten with Owatrol Net-Trol before proceeding. On Oak and Chestnut, manually or mechanically sand the wood, dust off and wash with Owatrol Net-Trol to clean.
Application
Before starting job, test penetration and absorbency by sprinkling water lightly onto the wood. If water is absorbed rapidly, surface is free of contamination and ready for staining. If water is repelled, thorough preparation, as for new wood must be performed. Before starting application, test the colour choice on a small area and allow to dry to determine final colour. Purchase sufficient product for the whole job and mix all product together before starting to avoid colour variances. Cover everything you do not wish to coat, including plants and shrubs. Apply between 10°C and 35°C. Do not apply in direct sunlight, on hot surfaces. Do not apply if cold and/or wet weather is expected within 48 hours. Mix product thoroughly before and during application. Do not thin. Always work the entire length of a deck board or horizontal siding to a logical break, such as a window or door frame. Vertical siding should be coated from top to bottom.
Owatrol Solid Color Stain is perfect for decks, docks and other horizontal surfaces and performs well on new and old timber including but not limited to softwood, hardwood, tropical and thermo heated wood. It also provides exceptional protection against moisture and performs well in high traffic areas.
