Tikkurila Grafotherm
Tikkurila Grafotherm is a single component waterbased anti-condensation coating which complies with the requirements of EN13501-1, class A2-s1d0. The product has MED (Marine Equipment Directive) certificate no MED-B-10019 and is thus accepted for painting surfaces inside ships.
Best Uses
Grafotherm anti condensation coating is suitable for use on steel roofing sheets, steel structures and other metal surfaces, where condensation and dripping-water problems occur. It is suitable for interior painting and exterior painting for surfaces protected from rain, and is also suitable for use on mineral walls and ceilings.
Tikkurila GrafoTherm is composed of millions of micropores in the sizes 0.1–100 microns. These form a multi-layer, porous texture with excellent moisture absorption capacity. Evaporation occurs faster than with conventional coatings due to the microporous structure, which breaks the water surface tension and spreads the moisture over the coating.
Application
The recommended application method is by airless spray. If airless spray is not possible then Grafotherm can be applied by brush or roller. Ensure all surfaces to be painted are fully prepped prior to application, by removing any oil, grease, salts and dirt by the appropriate means.
Zinc surfaces:
Sweep blast-clean with mineral abrasives (SaS) to an even roughness. For blasting material, use e.g. clean, dry quartz sand (SFS 5873). If sweep blasting is not possible, the surface should be roughened by hand abrading or washed with Panssaripesu Roof Cleaning Agent detergent.
Aluminium surfaces:
Sweep blast-clean with none-metallic abrasives to an even roughness (SaS, SFS 5873). If sweep blasting is not possible, the surface should be roughened by hand abrading or washed with Maalipesu Cleaning Agent detergent.
Previously painted surfaces:
Industrial coil primer on the backside of the steel roofing does not require any special preparation. Oil, grease, salts and dirt are removed by appropriate means. The priming damages can be fixed by Rostex Super Akvar or Temaprime EE. Note the overcoating time of the primer.
Stainless steel:
Roughen the surface by grinding or sweep blasting using non-metallic abrasives.
Mineral surfaces:
Prime the porous and absorbing surfaces with ProSeal primer before applying the GrafoTherm.
Priming
Rostex Super Akva, Temaprime EE, Temacoat RM 40, Temacoat Primer, Temacoat GPL-S Primer or directly on galvanized surface (see Surface preparation). Old painted surfaces are recommended to roughen to ensure adhesion.

The recommendable film thickness depends on the moisture stress and the type of structure. Check the separate Grafotherm Use Manual. The painting method, conditions, the shape of the painted surface and the quality of the surface all affect how much paint is needed. To fill the requirements of the MED certificate, the wet film thickness must be max 900 μm and the substrate must be of metal, material thickness min 0.75 mm. |
