Wood Primers

Wood Primers

Give your paint system the right starting point with a wood primer matched to the timber and finish. Promain Paints supplies primers for wood across interior decorating, exterior maintenance and specialist applications, including options for bare timber, MDF and previously coated surfaces.

Choose by the surface condition, exposure and topcoat rather than colour alone. Whether you need an exterior wood primer for joinery or an oil based primer for internal timber, our technical team can help you compare preparation, drying and compatibility before you order.

Which wood primer is right for your project?

Identify the wood and its current condition first. Bare softwood, resinous timber, plywood, MDF and previously painted joinery can need different preparation. The right primer must also be compatible with the paint undercoat and topcoat that will follow.

The best primer for your painting project addresses the reason the surface needs priming: absorption, adhesion, staining or a specified protective system. Buying the fastest drying or cheapest white primer does not necessarily solve the problem underneath the paint.

For exterior surfaces, include exposure to weather and the condition of joints or end grain in the assessment. For interior surfaces such as skirting boards and doors, think about the intended paint finish, odour during work and the time available before the area returns to use.

Do you need wood primer, undercoat or both?

Wood primer is the first coating selected for the timber itself. Undercoat helps prepare the primed surface for the finishing paint, including colour coverage and a more even base. Some products combine primer and undercoat functions, but that combination must be stated in the specification.

An undercoat intended for an already primed surface should not automatically be applied directly to bare wood. Equally, a clear wood treatment is not necessarily an undercoat for opaque paint. Follow the full system so that each layer has a defined purpose.

Where the product combines both roles, confirm the required number of coats. One coat may describe an initial wood primer application, not the complete preparation and decorative finish.

Oil based wood primer for interior and exterior timber

Coo-Var P224 Penetrating Wood Primer is an oil based wood primer for internal and external timber. It provides a white, semi-matt base and is listed for brush, roller or airless spray application.

This is an option to compare where an oil based primer is specified. Its product information separates a three-hour touch-dry time from recoating after 16 hours at 20 degrees C. That distinction matters when scheduling the undercoat and finish.

Do not assume every oil based wood primer follows those times. Preparation, temperature, ventilation and the actual product determine the sequence. Arrange the correct tool cleaner as part of the order, particularly where other coatings in the job are water based.

What is the best primer for exterior wood?

An exterior primer needs to match both the timber and the paint system. Doors, window frames, cladding and other external surfaces can have different finishing requirements. Check the coating's approved exterior use and any restrictions before applying it to a whole elevation.

The finished system, rather than the primer alone, must provide the required weather protection. Compare compatible exterior wood paints and stains early in the project. A stain that requires bare timber should not be applied over an opaque wood primer simply because both products are intended for exterior wood.

Resolve rot, leaking joints and persistent damp before decorating. Primer can support a properly prepared paint system, but it cannot restore decayed timber or make a faulty detail watertight.

What is suitable for previously painted wood?

Previously painted timber may need cleaning, abrasion and local priming rather than complete stripping. Remove flaking or loose paint, check the remaining finish is sound and confirm compatibility with the replacement system. Bare patches and filled areas can need separate attention.

Teknos Futura 3 Adhesion Primer is a matt alkyd product listed for use as a primer, primer surfacer, adhesion primer or intermediate coating. Promain Paints lists wooden surfaces internally and externally among its applications.

Use an adhesion-focused product where the specification calls for it, not as a way to cover unstable paint. An old coating that releases from the wood can take the new primer and finish with it.

Which primer should you use on MDF and plywood?

MDF has different preparation needs from solid timber, especially at cut edges and machined details. Coo-Var W463 MDF Primer is a water based, white primer developed for MDF surfaces. Compare its application instructions with the topcoat you intend to use.

Plywood also needs assessment by the panel type, surface condition and intended exposure. A primer cannot turn an unsuitable board into an exterior-grade material. Prepare edges, repairs and the face as required by the board and coating suppliers.

Do not confuse a smooth topcoat with proper sealing or suitable material selection. Plan the whole panel and its edges before assembly where the specification requires access that will be difficult later.

How should knots, resin and stains be treated?

Knots, resin and staining can show through a decorative finish unless the correct preparation system is used. A normal undercoat may improve colour coverage without isolating the source of discolouration. Choose a dedicated treatment where the product guidance calls for one.

Teamac P224/2 Aluminium Wood Primer is listed for knotted or resinous timber where resistance to resin staining is needed. Despite the name, it is a wood primer containing aluminium pigment, not simply a primer for aluminium metal.

Confirm the approved finishing paint and preparation. Different stains need different treatment, and active moisture problems should be resolved before applying a stain-blocking coating.

How do you prepare a wooden surface for primer?

Remove dirt, grease and loose material, and let the wood reach the condition required by the coating. Complete repairs with a suitable filler, then sand as instructed and remove dust. Protect adjacent surfaces before painting.

Work carefully around profiles and edges so that sanding does not damage the shape. On previously painted timber, avoid leaving sharp edges around bare patches. A well-prepared transition helps the undercoat and topcoat produce a consistent finish.

For substantial stripping or an unknown existing finish, establish what needs removing before choosing the primer. Preparation should leave a stable base, not a mixture of loose paint, sanding dust and cleaning residues.

Is one coat of wood primer enough?

Use the product's coverage and coat requirements. One coat may be sufficient on correctly prepared timber for one system, while highly absorbent areas or a different product may need another application. Do not apply two coats automatically without checking the instructions. One coat on an interior repair may have different requirements from an exterior timber system.

Inspect the first coat once it reaches the appropriate drying stage. Look for missed areas, raised wood grain or defects that need attention before undercoat. Sand between coats only as specified, then remove the dust without contaminating the surface.

Avoid substituting one heavy coat for the required sequence. Excess thickness can affect drying and appearance rather than improve the final result.

How do you compare drying time and coverage?

Read touch-dry and recoat times separately. A wood primer can feel dry while it is not ready for undercoat, and an oil based product can have different requirements from a water based primer on the same job.

Calculate quantity using the area, stated coverage and required coats. Absorbent end grain and rough wood can use more material than a smooth face. For a strong paint colour change, also consider the recommended undercoat colour instead of assuming extra topcoat will solve uneven coverage.

Keep the product and colour details for future maintenance. Check current pack sizes and delivery information before arranging the decorating work.
