Masonry paint colours

Choose masonry paint colours to suit the style of the property and the surrounding materials. White masonry paint remains a popular choice for a clean appearance, while grey masonry paint works well with stone, render, brick and modern exterior finishes. Green, cream, red, blue and other tinted shades are also available across selected ranges.

Colour is only one part of the specification. Before you buy masonry paint, check that the product is suitable for the surface, exposure and finish required. A smooth masonry coating can create a neat, attractive finish on sound walls, while a textured finish can help disguise small surface imperfections on roughcast or pebble dash.

Choosing masonry paint colours that suit your property

Exterior colours can change the appearance of exterior walls significantly, so consider the existing brick, roof, windows, doors and surrounding materials before choosing a shade.

Lighter colours can make a shaded exterior feel brighter, while grey masonry paint creates a neutral finish that suits both traditional and modern property styles. Darker shades can create stronger contrast but may show dust, dirt or weathering differently from pale colours.

For large exterior walls, it can be useful to test a small area before painting the full area. Colour can look different in direct sun, shade and wet weather. Check the selected masonry paint on the wall where possible.

Smooth masonry paint or textured masonry paint?

Smooth masonry paint is commonly chosen for exterior masonry where the surface is sound and a flatter appearance is preferred. Smooth masonry is easier to apply across larger wall areas and can be suitable for render, brick and concrete when the individual product specification allows.

Textured masonry paint gives exterior walls a heavier finish. It can help reduce the visual impact of minor surface imperfections and can work well on rough render, roughcast and pebble dash. It should not be used to hide structural cracking, loose render or other defects that need repair first.

Both smooth masonry paint and textured masonry paint are available in systems designed for long lasting protection against normal exterior weathering. The exact durability, weather resistance and maintenance interval depend on the selected product, preparation and exposure.

What is the best masonry paint for outside?

The best masonry paint is the one that matches the substrate and conditions. A standard masonry paint may be the perfect choice for sound brickwork or render, while exposed exterior masonry could need greater weather resistance. Older solid-wall properties may benefit from a breathable mineral or silicate system, and moving or cracked surfaces may require an elastomeric coating.

Concrete can also have different requirements from brick or stone. Some concrete structures need a decorative masonry paint, while others need a specialist protective or anti-carbonation system.

If you are comparing products, check approved surfaces, primer requirements, coverage, finish, drying conditions and the level of protection offered rather than choosing by colour or price alone.

Is masonry paint waterproof?

Some masonry paint is designed to resist rain and protect exterior walls from weathering, but not every product is a waterproofing system. Breathable coatings are particularly important where moisture needs to escape from porous masonry.

If the property already has persistent damp or water ingress, identify the cause before painting. Leaking gutters, failed pointing, cracks or damaged render should be repaired rather than covered with a new coat.

Promain also supplies specialist waterproof and elastomeric coatings for exterior masonry, concrete and brick where a higher level of water resistance is required.

Surface prep & stabilising solution: Best practice for applying masonry paint

Preparation is essential before applying masonry paint. The surface should be sound, clean and dry enough for the chosen system. Brush away dirt, loose material, mould, algae and flaking paint. Check brickwork, render, concrete, stone and pebble dash for cracking or damaged areas and complete suitable repairs before painting.

Do not assume that new masonry paint can simply be applied over old exterior paint. Existing coatings need to be firmly bonded and compatible with the new paint. Peeling, chalking or unstable areas should be removed and the remaining surface prepared in line with the product instructions.

Do I need to prime exterior masonry before painting?

Not every wall needs a separate primer. Some masonry paint can be applied to correctly prepared and previously coated exterior surfaces without a dedicated primer. Highly porous, dusty or friable masonry may need a stabilising primer or other preparatory product.

New concrete and cement-based render can also be highly alkaline, so the coating system must be specifically formulated for the substrate and its condition. Check curing times and manufacturer guidance before painting new cement, concrete or render.

Where a primer is required, use one that is compatible with the masonry paint. Applying an unsuitable primer can affect adhesion, breathability and the final finish.

Can masonry paint go straight onto concrete?

Masonry paint can be suitable for concrete when the manufacturer approves the product for that surface. The concrete should be sound, suitably cured and free from dirt, mould, laitance, oil and loose material.

Some concrete needs more than a standard masonry paint. Reinforced concrete, exposed structures or areas requiring anti-carbonation protection may need a dedicated protective coating. Promain stocks specialist concrete and masonry coatings for these applications.

How much masonry paint do I need?

How much masonry paint you need depends on the wall area, surface texture, porosity and the coverage rate of the chosen product. Rough render, concrete and pebble dash can use more paint than a smooth, previously primed surface.

Measure the height and width of each wall and subtract large doors or windows. Then compare the total area with the stated coverage rate. Many systems require a first coat and second coat to achieve the specified finish and protection, but always follow the individual product data.

Allow for additional paint on heavily textured masonry, porous brick, rough stone or pebble dash. Buying enough paint from the same colour batch can also help maintain a consistent appearance across larger walls.

How should masonry paint be applied?

Application method depends on the product and surface. A masonry brush can be useful for edges, joints and deeply textured brickwork, while a long-pile roller is often practical for rough render or pebble dash. Suitable spray equipment may be used where the manufacturer permits it.

Work within the stated temperature and weather conditions. Avoid painting exterior walls when rain, frost or excessive moisture could interfere with drying or curing.

Apply the recommended number of coats and allow the correct drying time before the second coat. Do not try to achieve full coverage with one excessively heavy coat, as this can affect drying and appearance.

Why choose Promain Paints for masonry paint and exterior coatings?

Promain supplies masonry paint and exterior wall coatings for projects ranging from domestic property maintenance to commercial and specialist applications.

The range includes standard masonry paints, smooth masonry paint, textured masonry paint, flexible and elastomeric products, mineral systems and specialist coatings for concrete, brick and stone. This makes it easier to choose exterior masonry protection around the needs of the building rather than relying on one type of paint for every surface.

Promain's technical team can help with product selection, surface preparation, primer choice, colour and application requirements. This is useful where exterior walls are exposed, previously coated, affected by moisture or made from several different materials.

Masonry paint for brick, render, stone and pebble dash

Brick, render, stone, concrete and pebble dash all behave differently. Porosity, texture, previous coatings and moisture movement can affect which masonry paint is suitable.

For brickwork, check that the paint is approved for the brick type and that the surface can release moisture as required. Render should be stable and repaired before painting. Stone may require a breathable system, particularly on older buildings. Pebble dash normally needs careful cleaning and enough paint to cover the uneven surface fully.

Some multi-surface exterior paint can also be suitable for wood or metal, but standard masonry paints should not automatically be used on wood or metal unless the technical data specifically allows it. Where wood or metal forms part of the same exterior project, choose a compatible product for each material.
