Identify the Deck your Working With

New Wood Surfaces - Quite often with new wood surfaces, the wood will come with a hard-shiny surface, known as mill glaze. The mill glaze will prevent products from penetrating and adhering properly. When this is the case, Seasonite protection for new wood should be used and allowed to weather for at least 6 months. After this, you will be able to treat the surface with a suitable deck paint.
Weathered Wood Surfaces - Weathered wood will need to be prepared properly. The surface will need to be cleaned and all grime and dirt will need to be removed. Net-trol is an ideal wood cleaner designed to clean your decking in preparation for decking treatment or coating.
Previously Coated Surfaces - All flaking or peeling paint should be removed prior to the application of any paint, oil or stain. You may need to use Dilunett to strip the coating first and then neutralise it with Net-trol. A further 48 hours should be allowed for the surface to dry properly before applying a suitable deck coating.

Remember to clean the area by removing any furniture, step nosing angles, pots or plants. Make sure all screws and nails have not come loose as the timber has expanded and contracted with moisture. Then sweep with a stiff brush to remove any leaves, algae or moss.

Non-Slip Decking Paint

A good-quality deck coating will have had slip tests done during the manufacture stage. These tests are universal and are done under laboratory conditions using a pendulum testing machine. The machine uses a rubber shoe which is attached to an arm that swings. It records the amount of distance the shoe moves across the surface in various wet and dry conditions. The shorter the distance, the higher the value of slip resistance.

The results are calculated under the title of PTV (Pendulum Test Value) and are rated as follows:

Low Slip Potential: +36
Moderate Slip Potential: 25-35
High Slip Potential: 0-24

This figure can be dramatically improved with anti-slip coatings, stains and additives supplied by Promain.
