Product Description

Please note, this product is now discontinued. See LACQ Parquet Varnish as a potential alternative.

Blackfriar Professional Heavy Duty Varnish is an odourless, two component, water-based, polyurethane varnish, design especially for application to wooden flooring but can also be applied to bar tops, furniture or concrete floors for resistance against a number of liquid solutions.

Best Uses

Blackfriar Professional Heavy Duty Varnish is a highly durable substance, designed to offer resistance to whatever surface it is applied to, with excellent abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and durability. Blackfriar Professional Heavy Duty Varnish is highly suitable for use in all domestic, commercial and industrial based environments on flat surfaces.

Application

Ensure the surface to be varnished is clean, dry, sound and free from wax, polish, oil or any other contamination. If wax has been used clean the surface thoroughly with white spirit prior to sanding. Bare wood should be sanded to a smooth surface, always working with the grain. Sound, previously varnished surfaces should be lightly sanded to provide a key. Previously coated surfaces of unknown origin should be coated with two full coats of Zinsser Bullseye Sealcoat in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Existing varnished surfaces which are unsound or in poor condition can be stripped back to bare timber with Blackfriar Professional Paint and Varnish Remover.

New concrete must be at least 6-month-old prior to varnishing. Concrete must be clean, dry and free from any surface laitance (a weak dusty layer on new concrete) and any other surface contaminants such as oils, grease, dirt etc. prior to applying the varnish. Power floated concrete must be prepared by suitable means (mechanical or chemical) to ensure an open, porous, sandpaper texture is achieved prior to varnishing.

Base and activator supplied in correct proportions. Add all activator to base container and mix thoroughly for at least 5 minutes until product is smooth and even. Allow to rest 5 minutes before using. DO NOT MIX PART UNITS. Badly activated or incorrectly mixed materials will affect performance and may cause early failure or discolouration.

The product may be applied by brush or roller. If applying by brush, apply evenly using light strokes following the grain of the wood. If apply via roller, use a short nap mohair roller. For best results 3 coats are recommended on new wood and 2 coats on previously varnished surfaces. Prior to application of the final coat or if the over coating time is exceeded, lightly abrade with fine glass paper working with the grain and remove dust. The varnish will appear cloudy when wet but will quickly dry to a clear finish. When applying to new or bare wood, thin the first coat with up to 10% water.

Surface and Environment

Blackfriar Professional Heavy Duty Varnish can be applied to all wooden floors, as well as bar tops, wooden worktops, wooden furniture and concrete floors with a high resistance to chemicals, boiling water, alcohol, coffee, tea, red wine, and dilute acid and alkalis. This product should be used internally for the best results.
