Product Description

Sherwin Williams Firetex FX9500 is a scrim free intumescent coating for exterior steel. Suitable for cellulosic fire protection, it provides up to 120 minutes fire protection. Tested to BS476-20/21.

Best Uses

Firetex FX9500 is an exterior durable intumescent, which can be applied directly onto clean blasted steel. It is suitable for application in-shop and on site, provided the conditions listed on the product data sheet are adhered to.

Application

The recommended application method is by airless spray. A trowel can be used for touch up areas only.

Blast clean to Sa2½ BS EN ISO 8501-1:2007. Average surface profile in the range 50-75 microns.
Always ensure that the surfaces to be coated are clean, dry and free from all surface contamination.

This material is intended for use in application facilities where atmospheric conditions can be controlled. It is possible to use Firetex FX9500 for site application, however proper attention must be paid to the temperature and moisture recommendations listed in this section.

The substrate temperature should be at least 3ºC above the dew point and always above 0°C.
The relative humidity shall not exceed 85%. In conditions of high relative humidity i.e. 80-85%, good ventilation conditions are essential.

After application, unless a sealer coat is applied prior to exposure, the coating must be protected from the weather until the material reaches a shore D hardness of 30 in order to become exterior durable. Applications below 15°C may result in insufficient curing and reduced weather resistance and performance. See application conditions and overcoating.

At application temperatures below 15°C, drying and curing times will be significantly extended. This material must be protected from moisture/water during the application and drying process. Failure to do so will adversely affect the physical properties. In order to achieve optimum water and chemical resistance, the temperature needs to be maintained above 15ºC during curing.

Recommended Primers

Macropoxy L574 Blast Primer
Macropoxy C425V2 Zinc Phosphate Primer
Macropoxy C400 Range
Macropoxy M111 Wet Blast Primer
Firextex C69 Fast-Track Blast Primer

Recommended Topcoats

Firetex FX9500 can be finished with an approved topcoat to prevent chalking or discolouration for an enhanced aesthetic appeal.

Where a high degree of gloss and colour retention is required, overcoat with Acrolon C137V2, Acrolon 7300, Acrolon 1850 within 7 days at a minimum dft of 50 microns, or in the case of
Acrolon C750V2 overcoat within 4 days.

These overcoating times refer to achievement of optimum adhesion at 23°C and will vary with temperature.

Firetex FX9500 is indefinitely overcoatable with itself.
