How Do I Paint My Fence?

Surface preparation will always be dependent on the paint/coating system we intend to use, also the age and condition of the fence would be a factor. If, for example, you were to use Bedec Barn Paint on a fence already painted, we would advise that all loose and flaking paint is removed and that the fence is abraded then thoroughly cleaned and degreased prior to application.

Using the same paint again for example, if we were to apply it to a pressure treated fence we would need to allow the fence to weather for around 6 months before painting. This would allow all the solvents trapped in the pressure treatments to escape, also allowing the mill glaze to weather away (a shiny surface produced from the milling process which can affect paint adhering).

When Is The Best Time To Paint Your Fence?

Spring or summer is generally the best time to paint your fence when the temperatures are warmer. 10-35 degrees C with a max 80% relative humidity would be ideal, with no fog or rain forecast. If you can protect your fence from direct sunlight during the application process, that would be ideal also, but again this may vary between brands and systems. We always advise customers to consult the manufacturers technical data sheet prior to use.

What Fence Paint Is Best?

This really depends on the finish and level of protection that is required. A good go to paint would be Bedec Barn paint in matt, gloss or satin finish, depending on what you want to achieve.

If it's a natural un-painted finish/look that you want, we would advise you to choose a penetrating oil such as Owatrol Textrol. Or, if you want to achieve a stained look, we might suggest you choose Solignum Architectural which has a BBA approval.

How Much Fence Paint Do I Need?

This is dependent on the coating system you opt for, as coverage can vary between brands. Wood is a natural substrate with varying porosity which can affect consumption, as can the chosen method of application. Using the same example as previously (Bedec Barn Paint), we would expect to see a coverage of 13-15 square metres per litre per coat, depending on the substrate texture, age and porosity.

A penetrating oil finish such as Textrol will achieve around 12m2 per litre, which again depends on the application method, as well as the type, age, porosity and texture of the fence in question. Sawn timber will consume more product, whereas planed timber will give you a higher coverage rate.
